Sterne Ravenlore
The Warrior of Light. Sterne set off on his journey to find answers to the visions and callings he'd been receiving since the Battle of Carteneau; its frequency increasing exponentially as the summers went by.A quiet and private individual with a tight reign over his emotions, Sterne does not freely offer his opinion of any matter or willingly shares any personal information of himself even if asked directly. Along with his calm demeanour and neutral facial expression, it is easy for everyone to overlook him and forgo seeking his opinion. At heart, he is a doting and fiercely protective big brother figure. While prying a smile from him remains a tall order, he is noticeably much warmer toward children and young teenagers in need of a steady adult figure.
Mond Ravenlore
Mond was raised by her brother since she was two and lives a sheltered life in Gridania. Born deaf due to an aetheric interference that could not be removed by any means, Mond doesn’t have much in terms of friends and had little adult interactions growing up. Despite this, she is cheerful, childishly gullible, curious and warm to everyone she meets. With her brother being a private individual, no one would know of their familial ties, save for a handful of trusted and respected persons in their lives. She remained unscathed under the care of E-Sumi-Yan throughout Sterne’s journey through the realm until Sterne no longer had a choice but to bring her under the Scions’ protection…
Sterne's Lore
Origins
While the earliest records of his residence in The Black Shroud dates six summers prior to the Seventh Umbral Calamity, Sterne has no memory of his first twenty summers due to a grievous injury to the head. The battle where he suffered the injury was the same that caused his parents disappearance. To this day, no one has been able to fully piece together who attacked them, how the battle fully panned out or why they were attacked in the first place. Not even the Elementals will shed any light to the events that happened...Side-effects
Coupled with the 'callings' and sudden ability to see the past, Sterne has found a rather unfortunate side-effect to this new ability: hypersensitivity to emotions of persons involved in the visions. While he has always had a reasonable hold on his emotions prior to receiving the Echo, he leashes it to an unhealthy degree after...Scars
Without his memory, Sterne has no explanation for the litany of scars over his body. The only ones that can be explained are the one that runs down from the side of his left hip down to the middle of his thigh, and the scar over his right eye. Both were a result of that ill-fated battle that cost him his memories and parents. The cross shaped scar on his left cheek, the four slashes at his inner arm and the other miscellaneous and small nicks? There is none.Silence
Despite popular belief, Sterne does have his opinions, but keeps them to himself as he does not feel it is his place to offer unsolicited opinions. Sterne is still very reluctant to voice his opinion even if asked directly, or as part of a larger group. There is a deep impression set in him, to not speak of his opinion. He has several minute tells that gives some little bit of indication of how he might be feeling in a discussion, though very few have made any notice of them.Protection
Keeping personal information private is for the sake of his little sister, so that their familial ties is not discovered and she would not be pulled into any nefarious schemes. It has happened once before; the market is after all, also a battlefield.Business
Having spent the summers following his parents disappearance cultivating his knowledge of herbs and medicines with the Botanist and Conjurers' Guilds and raising Mond, Sterne makes ends meet by harvesting/cross breeding herbs, making and selling high-quality medicines and specialty herbal tea blends. The prices of his wares are incredibly affordable, even to those in dire straits. He personally deals with only a small handful of customers directly, while his retainers handle order requests and deliveries of all others.
Mond's Lore
Origins
Born and raised in Gridania, Mond has no memories of her parents having been raised by her brother since she was two. She is aware that her brother has no recollection of their parents and has learned not to ask him such questions. Although, that hasn't stopped her from asking E-Sumi-Yan...Friendless
Being deaf, Mond struggles to befriend people. Children her age have a terrible propensity to openly mock her due to her disability and a majority of adults do not bother to acknowledge her because of the "cumbersomeness" to cater to her communication needs. Other than her brother, the only other persons she regularly communicates with are Guildmaster E-Sumi-Yan and a select handful of Conjurers from the Conjurers' Guild, Mother Miounne of the Carline Canopy, Guildmaster Fufucha of the Botanists' Guild and Guildmaster Beatin of the Carpenters' Guild.Fishing
Having taken a shine to the small child he'd oft see by her lonesome self around Gridania, Carpenters' Guildmaster Beatin gifts Mond a Maple Fishing Rod with the promise that his doors will be open for her to learn carpentry when she is of age. Little did he know, he would set loose a budding little fisher into Gridania, who can be found fishing in every waterhole she can find in her free time...Magicks
Mond has an excellent affinity for magicks, healing in particular. Though many thought her lessons in conjury would end in failure due to her disability, she surprisingly flourished. Much to the Padjals' confusion, the Elementals seem to have taken a shine to her, and would speak to her through aether pulses, the same kind those who communicate with her use to catch her attention.Magnetism
Familiars are somehow exceptionally attracted to Mond. Many travelling Arcanists will bemusedly find their carbuncles trailing after her, as do some travelers' mounts.

Sterne's Relationships
Mond Ravenlore
He is fiercely protective of his baby sister. As his only known surviving blood family, Sterne devoted himself to raising her since their parents' disappearance, doting on and babying her, and often struggles internally to discipline her if she gets into mischief (though that in itself is a very rare occurrence). She is his main motivation to stay alive and go home to.
Thancred Waters

Initially lukewarm due to the fact the times they interact is for Scion business. Their relationship goes cold after Sterne’s meeting with Word of the Mother, Thancred lashing out and putting blame on Sterne for Minfilia’s fate. Sterne kept his distance from Thancred since then, but they return to lukewarm relations for Ryne's sake. Many a time though, their fellow Scions seem to hint to him that Thancred has feelings for him, but Sterne will internally dismiss them; after all, the Hyur has already made his feelings very clear.
Alphinaud Leveilleur

They had a poor start due to bad first impressions and Alphinaud’s initial poor treatment of Sterne. It slowly improves as time passes, Sterne offering a steady presence behind Alphinaud whenever needed, growing to respect and trust Alphinaud, and eventually loosens his guard to be more emotive when they interact and even dote upon him a little. He considers Alphinaud a little brother and Sterne offers his family name to Alphinaud when Fourchenault disowns him, to remind Alphinaud that family is not necessarily only by blood.
Alisaie Leveilleur

As with Alphinaud, they had a poor start due to bad first impressions; but unlike Alphinaud, he does not warm up to her until after the incident with Ga Bu. However, given Alisaie’s temper and propensity to be ‘tough’ and ‘rough', Sterne is more measured in his interactions with her. Sterne also offers his family name to Alisaie when Fourchenault disowns the twins, stating that he already sees them as siblings even should they refuse his offer.
Y'shtola Rhul

Initially lukewarm due to the fact the times they interact is for Scion business. Sterne kept his distance from Y'shtola, sensing her distrust of him. While Y’shtola does become a little warmer through their journey, their relationship goes frigid during their journey in the First when she uses the forbidden spell Flow for a second time. Sterne makes it clear to Y’shtola then that if her reaction is to only utilize forbidden spells, she should remember who will have to bear the weight of Y’mhitra’s grief. Their relationship has remained neutral, but civil, since.
Urianger Augurelt

Urianger and Sterne were, and is still, not close. After the debacle with the Warriors of Darkness, Sterne will scrutinize everything he says. Upon viewing an Echo of Urianger knowing the Crystal Exarch's plans and drawing his conclusions on the unspoken contingencies, Sterne has refused to assuage Urianger’s guilt over his deception and has been neutrally civil with Urianger since.
Minfilia Warde

Lukewarm at best; while Sterne has heard of Minfilia’s greatness, he has not borne witness to any feat she has done.Sterne can only see her as the Antecendent of the Scions, even though she publicly calls him friend. He privately disagrees with her decision to blindly follow Hydaelyn’s call and offering herself to become Word of The Mother, noting that she had not spared a thought to those she left behind (Thancred and F’lhaminn). His opinion of her worsens after witnessing her meeting with Thancred in the First in an Echo.
Tataru Taru

The first of the Scions Sterne considers a friend; Tataru is the first to start chatting with Sterne outside of Scion business and they developed friendly ties. Sterne puts his trust in her to discreetly have a letter sent to the Conjurors Guild when they are forced into hiding. They bond over cooking, often exchanging tips with each other and he teaches her about medicinal herbs and keeps the Scions’ medicine stores well stocked with her. He reminds Tataru that even though she is not fighting in the front lines, she is a reminder to them that they have someone to come home to.
Krile Baldesion

Initially lukewarm. They became more friendly with the shared experiences of the Echo, where she came to learn of his secondary ability and took time to engage with Sterne in topics outside of Scion business. They bonded over medicinal tea blends, with Sterne’s prior business in growing herbs and selling specialized herbal tea blends and medicines, and Krile’s background in healing. Sterne is comfortable with her teasing, as he knows that she has awareness of certain topics not to touch.
G’raha Tia

Sterne has not forgiven G’raha for his plans in the First. He is neutrally civil toward him as fellow Scion and has not yet shown any indication that he is open to a reconciliation. Many might think his refusal to reconcile is due to G'raha's thoughtlessness of his feelings, but in truth it has more to do with the contingencies of if he failed to summon Sterne that were never publicly revealed.
Estinien Varlineau

There is mutual respect between them and they are cordial, but Sterne has always been quietly displeased with Estinien and Ysayle Iceheart for dragging Alphinaud into their pissing contest during their travels. Nonetheless, Estinien takes Sterne seriously when he speaks, and Sterne trusts Estinien to have his back. After his joining to the Scions, Tataru makes Sterne the 'Estinien Keeper' to prevent the Dragoon from making poor purchase choices if he is using the Scions' coin... (otherwise, Sterne does nothing; Estinien's coin is for Estinien to use.)
Ryne Waters

They have a very warm relationship, with Sterne rotating between being a mentor and big brother (sometimes more fatherly than brotherly) toward Ryne. Sterne takes Ryne under his wing to help her polish her fighting skills, takes time to have discussions with her and dotes on the affection starved teen. From the time of their first meeting up until the time they travel to meet the original Oracle of Light, Sterne has never referred to her as Minfilia, something that Ryne does not notice until after she receives her own name from Thancred (but the rest of the Scions did).
Erenville

Sterne and Erenville have a cordial relationship. Sterne respects Erenville for his wealth of knowledge of his chosen discipline and while they don't speak to each other very often, the few times they do, they have quiet, in-depth discussions over flora and fauna. Sterne is fairly relaxed in Erenville's presence and it helps that Erenville willingly indulges Mond's curiosity on fauna and is kind to her.
Y'mhitra Rhul

Despite his non-existent relationship with her half-sister, Sterne and Y'mhitra got along fairly well at the beginning when he began learning the Summoner Arts from her. Their relationship fractures when in her grief of losing Y'shtola after the Bloody Banquet, puts blame on him for not keeping her sister safe. Sterne has since returned the Summoner garb to Rammbroes, although the Roegadyn refused to take the Soul Crystal and insisted he keep it, and permanently retired his grimoire from battle.
E-Sumi-Yan

He deeply respects the eldest of the Padjals and wholly trusts him. Sterne might not ask the Conjurers' Guildmaster for advice often, but considers E-Sumi-Yan's words carefully whenever the Padjal freely offers it. Sterne is aware that E-Sumi-Yan knew him and his parents from before the incident, but he does not ask E-Sumi-Yan for information on his past.
Lyse Hext

Sterne and Lyse aren't particularly close given that they did not spend that much time together outside of Scion work. It's only during their travels through Gyr Abania and Othard that their relationship does shift into more than just colleagues. Sterne warms up enough to see Lyse as a friend, supporting through means of being there and asking her feelings and what she feels she needs to do rather than dictate her actions.
Papalymo Totolymo

Sterne and Papalymo were not close, but had mutual respect for each other. Sterne will quietly listen to all of Papalymo's lectures (and actually pay attention to them) and while they never got past just being colleagues, but there was enough trust that Sterne did not fight Papalymo for choosing his path, even if it would lead to his death.
Mond's Relationships
Sterne Ravenlore

Mond adores her big brother to infinity and beyond, and is fiercely protective of him as he is of her. Sterne has always been her constant, her safe person who grounds her whenever she needs him.
Thancred Waters

Mond likes Thancred since he can communicate with her through sign language, but doesn't understand why he feels so strange whenever he is with her brother. While Thancred cannot freely manipulate his aether, Mond can still sense his feelings and cannot make heads or tails of the fluctuating emotions whenever he's near Sterne.
Alphinaud Leveilleur

Mond, like Sterne, opened her arms and heart to welcome Alphinaud and Alisaie to their family after their disownment from the Leveilleur name and always introduces them as her siblings. She's happy to learn when he teaches her arcanima and enjoys playing with Moonshine and Obsidian. Cuddle time with big brother Alphie is also much loved.
Alisaie Leveilleur

Mond adores Alisaie and finds her awesome. She's more than happy to cuddle with big sister Ali when she can and gobbles up her teaching in Red magicks even though she can't fence. Mond loves everything about her sister, but she does however, avoid Alisaie's cooking. Her tastebuds have not entirely recovered from Alisaie's crispy burnt fish...
Erenville

Mond likes Erenville very much as he very kind to her and indulges her questions of the fauna of Tural. She is attentive to his lessons as he teaches her of the creatures they chance upon in the field and takes her task of keeping Erenville safe in their travels seriously.
Y'shtola Rhul

Mond does not have much of a relationship with Y'shtola due to how few interactions they've had. She can tell that there's some friction between Y'shtola and her brother, but she is polite toward Y'shtola when they do meet.
Urianger Augurelt

Urianger's flowery language confuses Mond and she struggles to understand him. Even his writing proves difficult for her to parse and she has to ask for a translation in layman terms to understand. She is polite toward him, but not cuddly-warm as she is with some other Scions.
Tataru Taru

Mond adores Miss Tata very much. She gets spoilt with gifts and treats from Miss Tata often, though she tries to pay back with doing tasks for her. Whenever Mond requests a cuddle, Miss Tata is always ready to give her one.
Krile Baldesion

She gets along famously with Miss Ruru. Mond considers her another teacher in conjury arts, later in Pictomancy as well, and learnt various self improvement techniques from her, such as stabilizing aether in an empty body and controlling her aether from pulsing wildly out of control if she is in distress. Lessons with Miss Ruru is always fun even if she doesn't understand some teasing references.
G’raha Tia

Mond does not tend to linger close to G'raha. She associates his aether with pain, recognising it as the one who kept on giving her splitting headaches at one point of time. She can sense a deep rift between him and her brother which further discomforts her. She is polite to him, but steers clear as much as she can.
Estinien Varlineau

Initially fearful of Estinien due to being able to feel Nidhogg's dark angry aether in him. She used to hide behind her brother and shy away from Estinien whenever he is around, but gets a little better at it as time passes. At least she greets him now.
E-Sumi-Yan

Her primary conjury teacher and secondary guardian if anything should happen to her brother. Mond adores Master E-Sumi-Yan, his kindness, calm and soothing demeanour, and does her utmost to follow his lessons. He's the next person she will seek out if her brother is unavailable, to anchor her if she needs it.
Sylphie Webb

Despite Sylphie being her senior, Mond does not come across Sylphie until her brother officially takes up conjury in the guild. Mond had problems trying to connect with Sylphie in the beginning because of her behaviour, but once Sylphie opened herself to the Elementals, they became fast friends. With Alaqa and Gatty, they are teasingly dubbed the 'Apprentice Quartet' whenever they are out and about in Gridania handling errands for the Guild.
Alaqa

Mond and Alaqa get along swimmingly; she welcomes Alaqa warmly to the Guild despite the reservations of the senior conjurers because of Alaqa's 'crimes'. While they did have some problems with trying to communicate due to Mond's deafness, Alaqa nonetheless takes time to have 'notepad conversations' with Mond and Mond in turn does her best to help Alaqa with her conjury.
Gatty Orwell

As the closest in age, Mond and Gatty get along quite well, with the latter picking up sign language quickly to communicate with Mond. Mond is happy to help Gatty with conjury and even introduced her to her favourite hobby of fishing. The Conjurers' Guild has needed to get Sylphie and Alaqa to keep an eye on their fishing expeditions lest they fish the entire Black Shroud empty...
